At the risk of being controversial, can we talk about the term 'selfish knitting' for a moment? I don’t like it. 'Selfish knitting' implies that choosing not to knit for others makes the hobby less worthy, that's it's more acceptable to use your time and resources to make something for someone else, than to use the same time and resources to make something for yourself.
Gardeners who practice their craft only in their own gardens aren’t ‘selfish gardeners’.
Knitting as a form of meditation is just as valid as practicing yoga as a form of meditation. When was the last time you heard the term 'selfish yogi'?
It's a form of shaming and sadly, we are shaming ourselves and each other. I've never heard 'selfish knitting' spoken by a non-knitter.
I'm not saying knitters shouldn't knit for others. I love to give the gift of knitting to people and causes that are close to my heart. If gift knitting is your thing, knit on and gift all the things!
That being said, having skill doesn’t mean you have an obligation to dedicate that skill to anyone and you are allowed knit on and keep all the things!
What do you think? Does the term selfish knitting evoke any thoughts or feelings for you?
